Human history, as the curator of Women at War Monika Fabijanska aptly points out in the following essay, is primarily recorded through surviving works of art, by victors of military conflicts, by men. The principal objective of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine is annihilation not only of the Ukrainian statehood, but also of the very idea that Ukrainian culture is separate from Russian culture, of the Ukrainians’ ability to record their own history.

Women at War, co-presented with Voloshyn Gallery from Kyiv, is our small contribution to the heroic resistance mounted by Ukrainian soldiers and the civilians to the physical and cultural genocide they are facing. The artists in the exhibition tell stories of trauma, survival, heroism, and hope; they fight by recording history through art. They are women at war.
