Nate Lewis is best known for his intricate works on paper, which combine elements of drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, and explore connections among visualizations, anatomy and physical movement, medical diagnostics, and healing. His most recent works exhibited at Fridman Gallery in New York captured dancers in motions with limbs intertwined against richly textured backgrounds, which not only enveloped the figures but also accentuated their curvilinear body-movements. “For me diagnostic imagery has been the key” says Lewis. “Medical diagnostics is a unique language critical to understanding a patient’s condition. These nuanced ways of looking at and listening to a body profoundly influence how I see, hear, and understand the world,” says Lewis.
Nate Lewis (b. 1985, Beaver Falls, PA; based in New York City) earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University and practiced critical-care nursing for nine years. Lewis’s work has been exhibited at The California African American Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem. Lewis’s work is in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, the Brooklyn Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Wellin Museum of Art, and the Blanton Museum of Art.
