Lauren Luloff: Square Paintings and a Stripe Painting

Fridman Gallery is honored to announce Lauren Luloff's first solo exhibition with the gallery, presenting a series of 12 new works. In a departure from the artist's earlier practice, the new pieces follow grids and linear patterns as a "roadway into her subconscious". Luloff's signature organic, flowing forms now play with the dichotomy of order and chaos, the dissonant and the harmonious, the unsettling and the soothing. Each pattern can be seen as a wavelength, a molecule, a neuron in a complex network of communications. The paintings also can be read as landscapes, an homage to Luloff's newly found home in Northern Maine. The changing seasons, the passage of time, the shifting colors, the rituals of morning light, of budding trees, of ripened fruit, of holidays and harvest. The artist's time-based process of mark-making - brush-painting dyes onto stretched silk then unstretching and steaming the fabric to let the dyes seep in - recalls symbiosis and growth found in the natural environment. The clashing patterns can do no wrong, they are absorbed into a larger whole.
