Hamilton S. Smith was educated as a lawyer and a dentist and followed in his father's
footsteps as a member of the Prince Hall Masons. He was also an accomplished photographer specializing in family portrait and documentation of urban landscapes in Boston and Washington DC.

Lorna Simpson is an American photographer and multimedia artist from Brooklyn, New York
whose works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 1990, she became one of the first AfricanaAmerican women to exhibit at the Venice Biennale. She was also the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art with her Projects 23 exhibition.

Some of her work consists of exact photographic reproductions of the work of other photographers such as Walker Evans, Eliott Porter, and Edward Weston. She is best known for her series of photographs, 'After Walker Evans', which was shown at her 1981 soloe xhibition at Metro Pictures Gallery in New York. She is currently represented by David Zwirner Gallery.
