Tuskegee Institute is a historically black university in Alabama. It was founded on July 4th 1881 by Lewis Adams and Booker T. Washington. It was the home to several important African American figures, including founder and first president Booker T. Washington, scientist George Washington Carver and World War II's Tuskegee Airmen.

Roland Ayers was an African American watercolorist, printmaker, and muralist from Philadelphia. He is best known for his intricate drawings of black inked figures of humans and nature intertwined against a neutral backdrop. Ayers considered his artwork to be poetry as he was a lover of jazz and books.
