Leroy Allen was an American water colorist and figurative artist from Kansas City, MO. His realistic style focused on African American life and community and won him more than 30 art awards nationally. Allen joined the Army and served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1972.

Langston Hughes was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist from Joplin, Missouri. He is one of the earliest innovators of the literary art form called jazz poetry and is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes also wrote plays and published short story collections, novels, and several non fiction works. The Big Sea is an autobiographical work by Langston Hughes. He tells his experience in it of traveling to Africa, being a writer of color in Paris, and his experiences living in New York during the Harlem Rennaisance.1of 6
