Jerome Lagarrigue

French-American painter Jerome Lagarrigue is renowned for powerful interpretations of his subjects’ interior, psychological spaces. Lagarrigue grew up in Paris and received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1996. A recipient of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award, the Ezra Jack Keats Award, and the Villa Medici grant, Lagarrigue taught drawing and painting at the Parsons School of Design. In 2007 Lagarrigue illustrated Maya Angelou's book Poetry for Young People. In 2009-2010, he was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to paint sets for a production of Tosca, and by Georges Lucas to create a painting commemorating the Star Wars trilogy. Lagarrigue has had institutional solo exhibitions at the RISD Museum (Providence), Villa Medici (Rome), and Palais de la Bourse (Marseilles). In addition to a number of notable private collections, his work is in the public collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Brooklyn Museum, where it is currently on view in Giants, from the Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.
