Terrence Musekiwa
(Born in 1990 in Seke, Zimbabwe- Lives and works in London, UK)
Terrence Musekiwa's artistic practice is deeply rooted in a rich lineage of stone sculpture, a Zimbabwen tradition passed down through generations. His heritage is intrinsically linked to the artistic legacy of his father, Kennedy Musekiwa, and is a testament to Zimbabwe's centuries-old artistic tapestry. By integrating deeply personal found objects, Musekiwa's work extends the continuum of Zimbabwe's oral histories, which have evolved and endured through generations of societal upheaval.
Musekiwa's art is profoundly informed by syncretism—a fusion of preservation and adaptation that is central to oral traditions. His creations serve as a vivid manifestation of this cultural codification, deftly merging contemporary techniques, philosophies, and materials with the profound wisdom inherited from his ancestors. Through this intricate synthesis, Musekiwa infuses his art with an enduring spirit and deep resonance, breathing life into his sculptures and connecting them to both past and present.
In 2022, Musekiwa represented Zimbabwe in the 59th Venice Biennial, and was included in the 14th Dakar Biennale. In Summer 2024, Musekiwa will have work included in the Villa Datris Foundation in France.
His work is in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Villa Datris Foundation, France, and the US Department of State.
