Adjani Okpu-Egbe
(Born 1979 in Kumba, Southern Cameroon - Lives and works in London, UK)
Adjani Okpu-Egbe is a Cameroonian-British artist who employs a semi-abstract-figurative and expressive painterly language intertwined with autobiographical narratives. Inspired by everyday life and what he terms "unknown forces," Okpu-Egbe's work navigates interconnected themes within contemporary societies.
Incorporating symbolism such as fish, lemon-bearing vines, and semi-abstract creatures referred to as "Manimals," Adjani views his artistic practice as a commitment to contributing to the continuous effort of decolonization and advocating for freedoms grounded in sustainable, equitable, and transformative change. Often utilizing unconventional materials like door panels, boards, wood, and incorporating found objects sourced from urban environments such as books, mouse traps, bubble wrap, and artificial plants, Okpu-Egbe transforms salvaged materials into evocative metaphors.
