Azadeh Nia's paintings explore spaces that transcend physical reality, delving into different states of mind. Her recent work focuses on the concept of a space within a space-an alternate reality depicted through elements such as secret passages, black holes, or hallways that lure one in yet lead nowhere. Nia contrasts two layers in her work: the apparent, such as the interior of a room, and what subtly suggests a parallel existence. This duality creates a disorienting yet thrilling experience, presenting viewers with options that seem to offer a way out-or rather, a way in.
By challenging the boundaries of space and architecture, Nia merges different worlds within a single space, allowing them to interact. Her work creates a disorienting experience within familiar settings, often interiors, encouraging viewers to question their perception of reality and explore new possibilities.
Azadeh Nia was born in Tehran, Iran in 1988. She graduated with a MFA from the University of The Arts London in 2014. She has exhibited her work in New York, London, Tehran and Santa Fe, NM.
