Sahana Ramakrishnan’s practice is rooted in myth, science, and storytelling, exploring how we relate to the “Other”—whether that be planetary bodies, animal kin, or the vastness of time.
Drawing from her life experiences and research into mythologies of the Global South, Ramakrishnan uses both oil and mixed media, layering text, drawing, and paint to create surfaces rich with accumulated meaning.
Her approach is influenced by South Asian painting traditions, especially the techniques of Tanjore painting passed down from her grandmother, incorporating gold leaf and rhinestones to evoke scenes of reverence and transformation.
Sahana Ramakrishnan grew up in Singapore and graduated with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Her work is in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami.
